Danie Jordaan
Danie was a SACOMM vice president some years ago but he was unable to take up the presidency due to his recurring ill health. I was president at that time and I can attest to his proposed vision, mission and strategy for SACOMM. He put his effort and institutional resources where they counted on a national scale. We of course remember the wonderful conference he and his colleagues organised at NMMU in 2004, debates from which are still winding their way through SACOMM.
In an academic world seriously threatened by rampant instrumentalism, Danie was a beacon of hope, a man who could always see the bigger picture, even as the software systems try to restrict our vision, discretion and practices. He challenged the odds. His motor bike was more than a vehicle, it was a metaphor for his travels and adventures - academic and otherwise - a man on a path to somewhere important.
In SACOMM we have lost a great figure, a man of integrity, and a close friend.
.
Our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
