| Ordinary People I & II SABC documentary series. Produced by: Mail and Guardian Television. Director: Harriet Gavshon. Length: 12 x 27 mins. Marrying oppositional documentary techniques from the 1960s and '70s, the series follows the daily and weekly lives of people ranging from President Nelson Mandela to white right-wing worker organizations coming to grips with affirmative action. Generally, each episode focuses on such people's responses to events of wider importance, looking at the ways in which they affect three average people (the Mandela episode was a one-off special edition). The topics dealt with range from witchcraft, very much a live topic in rural and peri-urban areas of several provinces, to children's beauty pageants. There is also a retrospective episode which recalls the first series broadcast in 1993 - which itself broke new ground in television documentary production. Further Reading Govender, K.
