Director's Report
The Centre was fortunate in obtaining the services of numerous visiting scholars who contributed to teaching, research and publication. It was also invited to partner a number of international research projects. Details are provided below.
While the Centre's current prime emphasis remains on media, our intention is to strengthen other areas of on-going interdisciplinary research activity. Work already done on intercultural relations, community development and urban social movements, popular performance and education, African philosophy and semiotics, and visual anthropology, has complemented research and teaching into media-society relations.
The Centre also for the first time introduced and consolidated a number of interdisciplinary Working Groups drawing on academics and students from NU, the University of Durban-Westville, and the Natal and ML Sultan Technikons. Strong relations with community organisations remains a concern of the Centre, which worked intensively on a number of media and social development projects. The Centre initiated the formation of an informal Durban association of media/journalism/communication departments including the Natal and ML Sultan Technikons. The intention is to share resources and to facilitate inter-departmental cooperation and interaction.
Mr Eric Louw spent 5 weeks in the USA as a guest of the US Information Agency and the Office of International Programmes of the UDSA Graduate School. Along with a group of other African media professionals, he visited 8 cities where he met media managers and editors, public officials and academics. (KG Tomaselli)
