CMS has had a busier than normal year, revolving around a number of projects. Amongst there were: a) the very successful International Research Seminar on Political Economy of the Southern African Media. 28 delegates and CMS MA students from all over the world participated. [footnote - Major sponsors were the World Association for Christian Communication, the National Research Foundation (NRF), Independent Newspapers and Telkom. The project is continuing with further funding from business and the NRF. Additional observers/delegates included Robert Kriger and Tselane Morolo from the National Research Foundation and Saun Jacobs of IDASA. The Seminar was also attended and reported on by a variety of journalists including Elijah Mhlanga and Patrick Leeman and covered by the SABC's Channel Africa and The Media Channel (www.mediachannel.org/originals.safrica.shtml) (See ** for a full list of papers delivered.) b) The inauguration during the Seminar of the Prestigious Independent Newspapers Lecture on Freedom of the Media. Jane Duncan of the Freedom of Expression Institute, Johannesburg, provided an excellent first address (www.und/ac.za/und/ccms) c) Faculty/staff research on a series of themes now actively incorporated student researchers. Major topics were on visual anthropology and cultural tourism, community radio, youth and media, public memory, public health communication, media and development, and political economy of the media. d) Completion of Phases I and II of the UNESCO-sponsored Human Resources and the Media research, and six national workshops on gender sensitivity by Farhana Goga and Ira Horowitz (ww.und.ac.za/und/ccms**) e) Dr Ruth Teer-Tomaselli conducted a series of strategic planning workshops for Durban Youth Radio, January.
Staff (Faculty) and Students Miranda Young, a previous CMS MA graduate joined the teaching Programme. Chantell Oosthuysen, was appointed to a research position. Arnold Shepperson completed a contract research project for Durban Metro Electricity (with some help from Alex Holt during 1999) and assisted on a number of other projects. Ruth Teer-Tomaselli was promoted to Associate Professor. Teer-Tomaselli was again appointed as a judge for the M-Net Book Prize. She took up her four year reappointment on the Board of the SA Broadcasting Association, and was elected to the International Council of the International Association for Media and Communication Research, and to the World Radio Association. She was the personal guest of the Moroccan Minister of Broadcasting where the latter Conference was held. Teer-Tomaselli was also elected to the committee of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) for Southern Africa (FAWESA), and continues to serve on the FAWE Technical Committee in Nairobi. A FAWESA trip to Australia with Deputy Vice Chancellors from four South African institutions completed her very active year, which included conferences in Montreal, Cape Town and Durban. Keyan G Tomaselli was a keynote speaker at the Third Crossroads Conference on Cultural Studies in Birmingham, UK, where he was also elected to the steering committee of the proposed International Association for Cultural Studies. Tomaselli also served on the judging panel of the M-Net All Africa Film Awards. He undertook a lecture tour of Sweden where he also presented two symposium papers and was a guest speaker at a number of universities and research institutes. He was elected to the Board of DramAidE and is chair of the Development, Media and Arts Research Unit, a joint DramAidE-CMS initiative. Professor Lynn Dalrymple, Director of DramAidE and the Development, Media and Arts Research Unit, participated in the International Conference on AIDS, and began supervision in CMS on public health research projects. DramAidE moved offices to the CMS premises in March. Ph.D student Gibsen Boloka was awarded a four month Fellowship by the New School University, New York, while Boloka, Bright Phiri (Zambia), Eunice Ivala (Kenya) and Jerome Dube (Zimbabwe) were selected to participate in a two week Seminar on Democratisation and Governance at the University of Cape Town by the New School University, New York, in January. Ron Krabill, a New School Ph.D student and CMS visiting lecturer, concluded his 12 month stint in June, while Associate Professor Hopeton Dunn, CARIMAC, University of West Indies, spent another six weeks with us on his two-year research project. Henry Benson, a CMS Honours graduate taught the Information Technology course for the first time, and Jasper Cecil continued with the Video production course, assisted by Jeffrey Sehume. A video proposal jointly submitted with the Programme in Drama and Performance Studies to the M-Net EDIT 2000 competition was successful. The 20 minute drama, No Sir, I'm not on the menu, was broadcast on M-Net on 13 December. It won a National TV and Video Association "Craft Award" for directing, editing and camera. It also secured a Bronze Medal for a video production. Marlan Padayachee, Independent Newspapers KwaZulu-Natal, was appointed as industry liaison officer. This is an honorory position, very ably executed by Padayachee, with the support of his employer. David Wightman, Editorial Coordinator at Independent Newspapers KwaZulu-Natal and regional chair of the SA National Editors Forum, was elected as chair of the CMS Professional Advisory Committee. Andy Mason, a MA student was elected as Acting Co-ordinator of a Working Group representing cartoonists from seven African countries, a body established at the International Workshop on Cartoon Journalism and Democratisation in South Africa, University of Botswana, November.
Students The following students contributed to CMS and Faculty projects: Deanna Powers (USA), Tasneem Seedat and Geraldine David on Critical Arts. Eunice Ivala (Kenya) maintained the Outer CMS Web Page; Thato Foko (Lesotho) created and maintained the Inner Web Page; and Devan Govender redesigned the original Page created by Mike Aldridge, later maintained and extended by Terje Skjerdal (Norway). Reverend Feyissa Kebede (Ethiopia), René Smith and Ntokoza Ndlele helped in administration, the International Seminar, and other organisational tasks. Sunita Kaihar (India) coordinated the International Research Seminar. She is also an announcer on Radio Lotus. The following students tutored in a number of undergraduate programmes: Media & Communication, Sociology and Politics: Diedre Donneley, Eunice Ivala (Kenya), Bright Phiri (Zambia), Jeffrey Sehume; Anthea Simoes, Jerome Dube (Zimbabwe), René Smith and Toks Oyedemi (Nigeria). Smith also taught at Varsity College and Natal Technikon. Michelle Tager continued teaching in the Honours Narrative Film and TV course. Nthati Moorosi (Lesotho), Toks Oyedemi (Nigeria), Anita Kakar and Njord Svendsen (Norway) participated in the 2nd Graduate School Annual Conference. Other CMS delegates included Jeffrey Sehume, Prosper Luthuli and Morris Nyakudzya (Zimbabwe).
Students who assisted in various ways in other CMS projects included: Ntokoza Ndlele, Bright Phiri (Zambia), Alexandra von Strauss (Germany), Thembisa Mjwacu and Thato Foko (Lesotho). Publications Faculty members and students published articles in the following: Social Identities, Culturelink, Media Development, Critical Arts, Communicatio, Ecquid Novi, Communicare, and in a number of books, and refereed web journals like SAFUNDI, Reelmind etc. (See the Activities list). Publications deriving from CMS Ph.D student research were published by Dorothy Roome in the International Journal of Cultural Studies and the Journal of Film and Video. A number of articles derived from the International Seminar to be published in Media Development and a book will appear in 2001 (Boloka, Diedre Donneley; Teresa Groetan, Anthea Simoes, Njord Svendsen) and elsewhere. Kubi Rama's contribution will appear in ARTSresearch.
Visitors: The following visitors spent research and teaching time at CMS: Dr Hopeton Dunn, Caribbean Institute for Media and Communication (CARIMAC), Kingston, Jamaica. Dr Jae Maingard, Drama, Film, Theatre and Television, Bristol University, UK. John Riber, Media in Development Trust, Harare, Zimbabwe. Dr Frank Ukadike, Film Studies, Tulane University, USA. Line Yde Sondergaard, Roskilde University, served as a research intern with DramAidE under the auspices of the Development, Media and Arts Research Unit. Both Riber and Ukadike contributed to the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) by conducting seminars and introducing films, and in acting as discussants. René Smith and Jeffrey Sehume served on the DIFF's awards committee. The Festival's director was Alex Holt, a CMS Ph.D graduate.
