Varona’s research interests include critical indigenous qualitative research and public-private community partnerships within the tourism sector. Her MA focused on the Batlokoa community of Witsieshoek and their collaboration with a commercial tourism operator and the public sector in order to manage a communally-owned tourism enterprise. She recently participated in Prof. Keyan Tomaselli’s ‘Media Lab Project’, a training and support initiative to equip UKZN media students to be efficient reviewers and publicists at the Durban International Film Festival.
