Clifford Jani is a PhD student in CCMS. He holds an MSocSc (Cum Laude) in Media and Cultural Studies in which he explored the representation of black African migrants in the South African daily newspapers. The focus of Clifford’s master’s thesis titled, The good, the bad and the balanced: A critical analyses of the representation of black African migrants in the South African Newspapers, analysed the everyday experiences of discrimination faced by African migrants in the press.
For his PhD, Clifford is looking at the role of the press in the construction of Afrophobia in South Africa. The focus of his study is an exploration of the language and discourses used by newspapers when dealing with black African migrants. He is interested in problematizing the ‘Other’, de-politicizing, de-contextualizing, and aestheticizing representation of immigrant voices in the media.
